John Bennett, born November 26, 1840 in London England. When he was two and one half years old he was brought by his parents to Canada and afterward they came to Michigan.
After the Civil War broke out, he enlisted August 15, 1862 in Company G, 5th Michigan Cavalry Regiment. He participated in the following engagements: Gettysburg, Culpeper, Boonsborough and other lesser skirmishes, and served until May 30, 1865. He then returned to his home in Lebanon Township, Clinton County.
He was married August 15, 1865 to Samantha Murwin and one son was born to them- Clifton J. The wife died in 1869, and on January 2, 1871, Mr. Bennett was again married to Mrs. Melinda Blaine. To this marriage one daughter was born- Sarah M.
