Burton Clifton, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015.
After serving in Germany and Japan in World War II, he earned a BS degree in civil engineering from Texas Tech in 1949 and immediately started the second-longest career in the history of the Texas Highway Department (now TxDOT). He was a pioneer in the development of Texas highways, playing a major role in the planning, design and construction that took us from dirt roads and a few narrow two-lane U.S. Highways with gravel shoulders to the massive freeway systems of today. He met and married Dorothy Ann Johnson in 1947. Their devoted marriage lasted until she passed away in 2012. Burton was very mild-mannered, with a dry and charming sense of humor that withstood the trials of his entire 89 years. Following a long tradition in his family, Burton was very active in the Methodist Church and served as choir director (and baritone) at Edge Park Methodist Church, where he and his family were among the earliest members. He was also active in the SPEBSQSA, a barbershop singing organization. After retirement in 2003, Burton and Dorothy settled down to a bit of travel and devotion to their church and extended family.
Burton was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy.
Survivors: Son, David and daughter-in-law, Sandra; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Other survivors include his devoted caregivers, who took very good care of him in recent years and were considered and treated as family.
