At age 22 enlisted on 6/2/1861 as a private and was mustered into Co. H, 1st Minnesota Infantry. Wounded 7/21/1861 Bull Run, VA and mustered out on 5/5/1864.
He lost his life by being smothered by "black damp" at the bottom of a well being dug near the house. He was only 26 years old. It had such an effect on the family that for years no effort was made to sink a well near the house.
