Alan Harold Voorhis, 84, a lifelong Boone County and longtime Zionsville resident, died Nov. 24, 2015. He was born July 2, 1931, in Thorntown, to Carl Eugene and Esther Frances Wright Voorhis; they preceded him in death, as did his his brother, Kenneth Voorhis.

Alan was a 1951 graduate of Lebanon High School, and honorably served his country as a member of the Indiana Army National Guard.

On June 22, 1952, in Warsaw, Alan married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Hightshue. After living in Lebanon for a short time, they settled and began raising their children in Zionsville. This past June they celebrated their 63rd year of marriage together.

Alan was an excellent archer, and was the first person to get a perfect score at a downtown Indianapolis indoor tournament in the early 70s. He was an avid hunter, and for many years spent every November in Michigan hunting deer with his bow and rifle. He was a well-known craftsman who was the manager of Metzger’s Lumber for 32 years in Zionsville. When not overseeing the operations of the lumber yard, he could be found on his tractor mowing or raising his famous tomatoes. Many have claimed that there was no finer tomato than an “Alan Voorhis-raised” tomato, and once you had one no others could compare.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Jean Hightshue Voorhis; his children, Lester A. Voorhis, Michael W. (Monica) Voorhis and Marcel L. (Michael) Wallace; his grandchildren, Alissa, Evan, Kristen, Ashley, Adam, Brian, Emily, Micah, Jill, Galan and Hannah; 12 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Dale (Joan) Voorhis, Alma Dickerson (Tom) Heyl, Ed (Ruth) Dickerson, Don Voorhis and Bryon (Jeannie) Voorhis.

Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, at Salem United Methodist Church, 6701 S. 775 E, Zionsville, with a funeral service to be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, also at the church. Entombment will follow at Lincoln Memory Gardens, Whitestown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Parkinson’s Awareness Association of Central Indiana, 6847 Hillsdale Ct., Indianapolis, IN 46250, or visit their website to make an online memorial gift at www.paaci.org.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simplicity Funeral & Cremation Care, Indianapolis.
