CHAUMONT, N.Y. — Howard D. Cheevers, 87, of East Main Street, Chaumont, NY, died Thursday morning, Nov. 26, at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, NY, with his family at his side.
A graveside committal service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at St. Mary's Cemetery, Clayton, with Rev. Arthur J. LaBaff, pastor of St. Mary's Church officiating.
A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2016 at a time to be announced at the Clayton Fire Hall.
Born Sept. 1, 1928, in the town of Clayton, the son of Howard P. and Grace Halliday Cheever, he attended Clayton Schools, receiving his G.E.D. in 1972.
He had operated the family farm at Reynolds Corners, Town of Clayton, before going to work for the New York State Department of Transportation at Collins Landing as a laborer and equipment operator from 1969 until 1991.
A marriage to Corrine Mance ended in divorce. He married Jean M. Gillick Potter on Feb. 10, 1968, in Helena. N.Y. with Jean dying Oct. 30, 1990. He later married Georgia A, LaRose Daniels on April 8, 1992, with Georgia dying March 12, 2011.
He was a long time active member of both the Clayton Lions Club and the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed boating, country music, and anything with a motor or engine.
Surviving are a son, William D. and Elizabeth Cheever, Watertown; two daughters, Bonnie J. and Stephen Liebig, Buffalo, and Laurie A. and Randy Oakes, Missouri; a step daughter, Sally and John Rogers, Clayton; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two sisters, Isabelle Howard, Chaumont, Mary Turcotte, Clayton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Two sisters, June Corp and Hilda Reinman, both died before him.
Arrangements are entrusted to Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton.
