WELL KNOWN VALLEY COUNTY FARMER TAKES HIS OWN LIFE

Joe Stanton Cuts His Throat With Razor and Pocket Knife. Is Found Dead in Pasture by Hired Man and Son

NO KNOWN REASON FOR DEED- Was Well to Do Farmer With Happy Family. Sudden Mental Derangement Only solution of Mystery

Since the government road work has been going on down the valley we have not had telephone service to the southeast and Will Stanton had to drive to Ord this morning to get help and bring the news of the suicide of Joe Stanton, his brother. Will was called to the home of his brother at an early hour and could supply only the barest details of the terrible affair when he got to town. About all that he knew was the fact the Joe got up early and went to the pasture, as was his custom, after the horses. When he didn't return in a reasonable time his wife sent the hired man and the oldest son out to find out what was the matter and they found Joe lying on the ground in the pasture in a little ravine about 20 feet deep and ¼ mile from the house with his throat cut almost from ear to ear. A broken razor was laying beside him and he still had his pocket knife in his hand, showing that he had first attempted to kill himself with the razor and breaking it, was forced to resort to his pocket knife. The jugular veins were severed and death must have resulted by bleeding to death. Having the razor with him also indicated that the act was premeditated.
(At this point the article continues to chronicle the events of the day)
The Stantons had six small children, three boys and three girls, the oldest probably ten or twelve years old.
