Sanford R. Brainard was the eldest of 5 children of George and Delight Brainard. His father farmed in Brooklyn Twp., Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The township would be annexed to the City of Cleveland piecemeal between 1905 and 1917. During the Civil War Sanford enlisted in the 124th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Aug. 5, 1862 and was mustered into Company A, September 12, 1862. On Oct. 1, 1864 he was transferred to the 151st Company, 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps until being mustered out June 30, 1865, at Nashville, TN. Her married Flora S. Sausman, Feb. 12, 1868 in Cuyahoga County. They raised six children. Sanford supported his family by farming, then selling washboards, and lastly, working in real estate. He belonged to Brooklyn Post #368, Grand Army of the Republic. His name was inscribed on Panel #16 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio.

At the time of his death from chronic pulmonary T.B. at 71 years of age, he and Flora resided at 3767 W. 25th St., with his daughter, Ruby, and her husband, Alvin Held, and their children. Flora applied for a soldiers' widow's pension, Aug. 20, 1913, which was approved and issued as Certificate #765,482. She drew this pension until her death in 1941.
