Augustus W. Dales, of Henderson, Illinois, enlisted in October of 1861 in Co. K, 45th Illinois Infantry as a 1st Sergeant. This was the same week that Albert O. Dales enlisted in the 45th Illinois Infantry. Augustus was commissioned an officer later and mustered out in July of 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.

Augusta & Julia Dales were in Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa in the 1870 census, with Anna, 3, & Albert, 6 months old.

They were listed as Dale in Lawrence, Douglas, Kansas in the 1880 census. Their children in 1880 were listed as Anna, 13, born in Illinois; Albert, (Bert) 10, born in Iowa; Iva, 7, IA; & Alice, 2 IA ("Ailsie" in 1885 & 1895.)

An 1885 Kansas GAR record from the Washington Post, Lawrence, Douglas, Kansas, also records his Civil War service in the 45th Illinois Infantry. Four Kansas state census reports also record his service in the 45th Illinois Infantry and the 1910 census at Lawrence confirms that he served in the Union Army.

Civil War records list him as Dales and Kansas census reports list him as Dale. He was listed as Augustus W. Dales, age 11, in the 1850 Westford, Otsego, New York census with parents John M. Dales, 40, & Angeline Dales, 30. It is most likely his father, but listed as George M. Dales, on the gravestone with Angeline in Knox County, Illinois.

The 1855 Otsego County, New York State census lists Augustus W. Dales as William A. Dales, age 16, with John M. & Angelene Dales. His siblings in the 1855 state census were listed as Martin H., 18; Albert O., 14; George M. D., 12; Mary O., 8; John L. 5; & Katherine E., 4. The Dales moved to Knox County, Illinois by 1860 and Angeline "Ann" Dales remarried to Austin Gaines on November 12, 1867 in Knox County. (Illinois marriage index)

An Illinois veteran's index records that Augustus was 5 feet, 9 & a half inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was listed as single, a carpenter. Census reports in Lawrence list him as a miller or a grain dealer.

The Illinois Death Index records Augustus' brother, John L. Dale, # 85576245, (wife Lucretia Blackwood) with parents listed as John Dale and Angeline Levalley.

Oak Hill Cemetery records show Augustus W. and Julia Dale are buried in Section 12, Lot 172. Augustus was buried October 17, 1922. (His death date is 29 Oct 1922 in obit.) Julia was buried March 21, 1923. This plot was owned by their son Albert "Bert" Dale, #142288631, who is also buried there with his wife Sarah.
