Maxine LaVerne Pope Conley, born February 16, 1927 in Dustin, OK, grew up in rural Wetumka where she graduated high school in 1944. She began her civil service career at the McAlester Naval Ammunitions Depot. She accumulated more than 32 years before retiring in 1988 at TAFB. During a break in her civil service career, she also worked as a medical assistant for 10 years. After retiring from civil service, she worked at several jobs, a very enjoyable one being a “we pick you up” driver at Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Norman for her grandson Erick Sanderson. She also enjoyed periodic work at Mid-Del Physical Therapy Clinic. She served the Lord at several churches, the latest being Del View Baptist in Del City where she sang in the choir and as a “sometimes” soloist. She liked to travel and went on several trips with two of her “sisters-in-Christ”, Novella Tasker and Barbara Cole. Together they were known as “The Three Musketeers” by Pastor Jerry Connell. She enjoyed being at home where she would crochet things to give away. If there was anything in her life she could have changed, it would have been to be a more faithful follower and servant to Jesus Christ.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, James I and Beatrice Melton Pope; her husband, James Everett; brother James N Pope; three sisters, Mildred B Tinker, Margaret B Murar, and LaNell Aebischer and their spouses; and one son-in-law, Terry Sanderson. She is survived by her loving children, Anlisbeth (Anne) Sanderson of Del City, and James E Conley, Sr. and wife Karla of Shawnee; two grandsons, Erick D Sanderson and wife Lori of Oklahoma City, and James E Conley, Jr. and wife Mary of Newalla; one granddaughter, Kristen Marie Widener of Midwest City; six great-grandchildren, Ty Odom, Beny Sanderson, Madison Conley, Evan Sanderson, Isabel Sanderson, and Raighan Conley. She is also survived by one brother, Robert Paul Pope and wife June of Franklin, TN as well as a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law from Jim’s family, a loving church family, neighbors and friends. There was also a very special “Christian adopted” grandson Rev. Thomas E Brewer in her life’s later years.
If she had a favorite verse of scripture, it would have been Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” or perhaps Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” Please hide these scriptures in your hearts and give your hearts and lives to Him.
Funeral service will be 2:00 pm, Friday, November 13, 2015 in Candlewood chapel at Ford Funeral Service with burial to follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Oklahoma City. Visitation will be Wednesday 5-8pm, Thursday 8-8pm, and Friday 8-12pm.
