HENRY W. AYERS
RIVER PIONEER,
DIES IN SLEEP

Henry W. Ayers, Guerneville pioneer from the days of the logging industry, died Wednesday night during his sleep while visiting his son, Clyde W. Ayers, of Modesto.
Eighty-two years old, Ayers first came to the Russian river as a boy 65 years ago, and when the loggers moved on to new fields he remained, turning his attention to agriculture.
His death dissolved a marriage partnership of 59 years' standing. Mrs. Ayers, who was 14 years old when she became his bride, survives him, as does a daughter, Mrs. Oscar Birkhofer, in addition to the son in Modesto.
For many years Ayers operated a ranch near the entrance to the Armstrong State Park, but had been retired for some time. In recent years he had resided in Guerneville.
Two weeks ago he went to Modesto to visit his son, and apparently had been in good health. He was stricken with a heart attack, however, during his sleep.
Ayers was a member of Mount Jackson Masonic Lodge and Redwood Lodge of Odd Fellows, both of Guerneville. He was a native of Missouri.
There are 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon in the R. N. Tunstall chapel at Guerneville. The Rev. James Phillips will officiate and burial will follow in Odd Fellows' cemetery at Guerneville.
