In 1860, he was living with his farming family in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with dark hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg March 20, 1865, as a private with Co. C, 98th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865. He is found in the company register, Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, and the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file as "Kashman" but applied for his disability pension as "Cashman."

He married Retura Agnes Cashman [sic] and fathered the children you see linked below.
