Walter was born to Jacob Crow and Nelly Wright Crow in then Mercer County, Kentucky (now Boyle Co.). The family lived on Doctor's Fork of the Chaplin River near Brumfield. Walter married Susan Pritchett in 1816. They relocated to Ashley, Pike County, Missouri. Susan died in 1832 and is buried in Old Ashley Cemetery. In 1849 Walter caught gold fever and went to California. He saw other possibilities and left in December for Missouri. He gathered up sons, in-laws and others, bought up 900 head of cattle and drove them overland to California. Walter became sick and died just as the cattle drive reached the Sacramento, California area. His sons buried him on the banks of the Feather or Sacramento river near Verona. They herded the cattle south to now San Joaquin County. When they went back to Walter's grave they were unable to locate it. Walter's sons went on to found Crows Landing in Stanislaus County.
