Lela Blackwell

Lela Blackwell was born in Chriesman, Burleson County, TX on Dec 16, 1913 to E.M. and Lena Floyd. She had 3 brothers: Bill, James, Charlie, and 1 sister, Marie. Her mother's parents were German immigrants, coming to Texas at an early date. As the big sister to Charlie, she helped her mother care for him. She carried him on one hip wherever they were. He was so chubby, she would sit under the shade of a tree and bathe him with water to cool him in the summertime.

In her early years she lived on a farm. She recounted memories of a Flu Pandemic, in which her entire family contracted the "Spanish Flu". A neighbor would bring a pot of soup or stew and place it on a tree stump for the family.

Later her father worked for the railroad, which allowed her to travel for free on the train and she gained a pretty good knowledge of Texas geography. Once she and her husband Bill got into a discussion about where Beaumont, Texas was. She was correct, so Bill said they must have moved the town.

She tells of a time when she enjoyed taking a plane ride when some pilots, who arrived in town, and were giving rides to the people. When she was younger she tells of her first automobile ride in Galveston. She paid a nickel and laughingly said "it scared the wits" out of her.

Her family moved to West Texas and there she met her husband. She married Bill Blackwell in Aug. 6, 1937. Bill had lost his first wife and Lela said she would help him raise his three children…Bill, Anita and Gaynell.

Lela was preceded in death by her three brothers, her sister, husband Bill, and daughter Gaynell.

She held several different jobs in her life. She worked as a dietitian's helper in the hospital in Sweetwater. Some of her employment was with the grocery business, dry cleaners and various restaurants.

She loved to cook and the family would travel from parts of Texas for her famous cornbread dressing. Her hobbies were crocheting, sewing, gardening and growing flowers. Her favorite flower was the Calla Lily. She crocheted afghans for all the grandchildren. She loved her children and grandchildren.

When living in Canton, she attended the Baptist Church and made robes for the choir. As she grew older, and was no longer able to be independent, she loved to look out the window and watch the birds and squirrels in the back yard. She loved her morning coffee…and coffee throughout the day.

She had a quick wit…sometimes with a bite.

She loved the Lord with all her heart and always said that the Lord had left her on this earth so long so she could pray for others, which she did. She had said, for quite a while, that she was ready to meet her Lord and Savior. And on January 12, 2015, she did.

Lela was born on December 16, 1913 and passed away on Monday, January 12, 2015.

Lela was a resident of Rockwall, Texas.
