James Morehouse – James C. Morehouse was born Nov. 26, 1923 to Andy and Coryl (Kysar) Morehouse. He grew up on the family farm in the Hopkins MO area and attended the country school there. He went to Hopkins High School four years. The U. S. Army called him in 1943. He served in the Aleutian Islands and the 87th-10th Mountain Infantry in Italy. During his active service he received the Purple Heart, three Bronze Stars and a Silver Star.
In November 1946 he married Doris Newberry. To this union two sons were born, William Joseph and Stephen Edward. Later he was united in marriage to Grace Auffert on April 16, 1978.
He passed away Wednesday evening, Aug. 2, 2006 at Bergan Mercy Hospital, Omaha, NE, following an injury and extended illness.
Jim was well known for his woodworking, insurance adjusting for crops, and gardening. He also loved to dance. Jim was a lifetime member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his loving wife, Grace of Bedford; his two sons, Joseph of Blair, NE, and Stephen of New Market, IA; one sister, Barb Morehouse of Des Moines, IA; two sisters-in-law Josie Morehouse of Hopkins, MO, and Virginia Morehouse, Kansas City, KS; two step children, James Auffert of Chillicothe, MO, and Joyce Smith of Topeka, KS; six grandchildren, Stephenie, Emily, Bill, Kelly, T. J. and special friend Danielle, and Brandon; three step grandchildren Robyn, Ryan and Jennifer; six great grandchildren and three step great grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Marlin and Max; and one grandchild, Jaime Morehouse.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 7, 2006 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel, Bedford, with Rev. Jo Ann Johnson and Rev. Ted DeHass officiating. Burial was at Hopkins Cemetery, Hopkins, MO, with military rites by John F. Hardin Post #164 American Legion, Bedford. Memorials are suggested to Leukemia Society of donor’s choice. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Bedford was in charge of arrangements.
