J. D. SINGLETON RITES TUESDAY
Funeral services for J.D. Singleton, 67, for 26 years a resident of Amarillo and one of the leading contractors of the Panhandle, who died in a local hospital early Saturday morning from injuries received in an automobile accident, will be held from the Central Presbyterian church at 2:20 Tuesday afternoon.
Rev. R Thompson, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. G. L. Yates, pastor of the First Baptist church will assist at the services.
The body will lie in state at the family home, 2206 Taylor Street, until about 1:20 Tuesday afternoon when it will then be removed to the church for services. Burial in Llano cemetery.
PIONEER BUILDER
Mr. Singleton was contractor for many of Amarillo’s and the Panhandle’s finest buildings, including the Elks’ Home, the Panhandle, and the old telephone buildings, all of which are landmarks of the city. He has also built many of the public schools in this section.
Besides his widow, he is survived by four daughters and one son, Mrs. Ray A Allman, of Paducah, Texas, Mrs. F. A. Zimpfer, Misses Jane and Mildred Singleton and Martin Singleton, all of Amarillo. Two sisters, Mrs. T. W. Bounds, of Corsicana and Mrs. J. E. Simmons of Waxahachie, also survive.
He was a member of the Central Presbyterian church and the Knights of Pythias lodge. Mr. Singleton came to Amarillo from McClellan county in 1902, first entering the planing mill business with the late Joe Iloit, but sold out about three years later and engaged in contracting.
He was widely known throughout this section and was highly respected by all who knew him.
