Genevieve Josephine Eddy-Elwell, 101, of Washington, IL went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Nov 12th.

Genevieve was born Aug 6th 1914 in Redondo Beach, CA to George and Hazel (Maxey) McGuffie.

She was preceded in death by her 1st & 2nd husbands, Norman O. Eddy and Kenneth P. Elwell; sons, George and Roy (Connie) Eddy; daughter, Susie (Dale) Cree; and great-grandson, Tony Malone.

She is survived by her daughters, Pat (Steve-deceased) Crittenden of Dunlap, IL and Julie (Mark) Bersch of Albuquerque, NM; her son, Dave (Paulette) Eddy of East Peoria, IL; 9 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A native Californian, she graduated from Alhambra High School and helped her husband establish and run a local grocery market in Los Angeles during the depression. As the family grew she became a full time mom. All of us kids remember mom teaching us those wonderful songs while skillfully floating her fingers across the old upright piano keyboard. Mockingbird Hill, Won’t You Play a Simple Melody and the Old Rugged Cross to name a few. Music skills must skip a generation in our family, only the grandkids have shown they have her talent.

After moving to Peoria in the early 60’s, Mom and Pop joined Tyng Memorial Church in Peoria’s Southside. Mom was in the choir, performed janitorial services, and dedicated her time to serving others. Tyng is the predecessor to Fellowship Bible Church located in NW Peoria.

After Pop died in 1964, she dedicated her time to raising our youngest sister, Julie, by cleaning homes and taking care of her stepmom, Carrie.

After being widowed for 20 years, she married a fine Alabama gentleman, Ken Elwell, and spent the better part of 14 years enjoying life, family and serving others in Aniston, AL.

In 1998, after Ken passed away, Mom returned home to Peoria and renewed her service and dedication to her church and family. Due to failing health she has spent the past 4 1/2 years at Washington Christian Village. They’ve given wonderful care to this precious lady and we thank them all for their service.

While everyone remembers Mom’s kind heart and dedicated service, what she’ll be remembered for most is her infectious smile. She shared with all!

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Friday, November 20, at Fellowship Bible Church, 4006 N. Sterling Ave., in Peoria. Pastor Jason Alligood will officiate. A visitation for family and friends will be from 10 to 11 AM at the church. A brief interment service will follow at Springdale Cemetery. Everyone is invited to a luncheon at the church at 1 PM.
