Of all the families in the Winter Quarters #4 coal mine tragedy, the Hunters and Luomas stand out. Of the two families 17 male members were killed. This was the male population, except one. Dads (husbands) sons, uncles, nephews all gone. 10:15 am, on the morning of May 1st, 1900 all was well in the world. With 17 men working in the coal mine, each Luoma - Hunter family woould have known some measure of frontier prosperity. Not taht life was anything close to peachy but the bills were paid, the town was kept up and life hade a rhythm and a orderly sense about it. Come up on 10:45 am every home and every person held deep uncertainty. Just what was that dull thud, the door ajar move slightly, the dishes rattled as did the window glass. Pets begain to pace, aware this was not ordinary.
Townsfolk began to walk the toward the mine: a dark smokey cloud issuing from #4. Life as these good people knew it was over.
Adam Hunter was killed in the explosion of Winter Quarters #4, a coal mine, Scofield, Utah, May 1st, 1900.
