Temple Mendenhall was born on November 22, 1806 in Springfield, Guilford County, North Carolina, the son of Ouaker parents, Richard Mendenhall, who was born in North Carolina, and Mary "Polly" (Clemmons) Mendenhall, who was born in Ohio.
Temple Mendenhall was married in Morgan County, Indiana on January 22, 1834 to Sarah Newlin. Sarah was born on April 10, 1815 in Clinton County, Ohio, the daughter of John Newlin and Esther (Stubbs) Newlin.
Temple Mendenhall and Sarah (Newlin) Mendenhall are believed to have had at least 14 children including;
1. Achsah Mendenhall, born September 13, 1835/36. Achsah Mendenhall died on October 11, 1869 and his mortal remains were laid in the Friends Cemetery in Lynnville, Jasper County, Iowa. See his Find A Grave Memorial# 154939613.

2. Zimri Mendenhall, born October __, 1836/37 in Indiana. Zimri Mendenhall was married to Mary Ellen Way on December 13, 1860 in Jefferson, Iowa. Mary was born November __, 1843 in either Iowa, or Kansas, according to her son, Oscar's, death certificate.

9. Temple Mendenhall Jr., born September 13, 1846 in Plainfield, Hendricks County, Indiana. Temple lived in Hendricks County, Indiana, near Plainfield, Indiana, all his life except for 10 to 20 year period when his parents initially moved the family to Jasper County, Iowa. Temple and his brother, Elisha and Allen, soon returned to Hendricks County, Indiana by 1880.

13. Enos Pray Mendenhall, born c. 1857/58 in Indiana. Enos' middle name according to his death certificate was Enos "Pray" Mendenhall. The informant was his niece, Nellie V.
