Temple Mendenhall was born on November 22, 1806 in Springfield, Guilford County, North Carolina, the son of Ouaker parents, Richard Mendenhall, who was born in North Carolina, and Mary "Polly" (Clemmons) Mendenhall, who was born in Ohio.
Temple Mendenhall was married in Morgan County, Indiana on January 22, 1834 to Sarah Newlin. Sarah was born on April 10, 1815 in Clinton County, Ohio, the daughter of John Newlin and Esther (Stubbs) Newlin.
Temple Mendenhall and Sarah (Newlin) Mendenhall are believed to have had at least 14 children including;
1. Achsah Mendenhall, born September 13, 1835/36. Achsah Mendenhall died on October 11, 1869 and his mortal remains were laid in the Friends Cemetery in Lynnville, Jasper County, Iowa. See his Find A Grave Memorial# 154939613.

2. Zimri Mendenhall, born October __, 1836/37 in Indiana. Zimri Mendenhall was married to Mary Ellen Way on December 13, 1860 in Jefferson, Iowa. Mary was born November __, 1843 in either Iowa, or Kansas, according to her son, Oscar's, death certificate.
Zimri and Mary were the parents of at least seven children including;
A. Sarah J. Mendenhall, born c. 1861 in Iowa. Sarah died c. 1863 in Iowa.

B. Alice Mendenhall, born c. 1863 in Iowa.

C. Irvee Mendenhall, born c. 1865 in Iowa.

D. Reeve Mendenhall, born September 4, 1866/67 in Iowa. Revee Mendenhall died on February 20, 1896 and his mortal remains were laid in the Champoeg Cemetery in Aurora, Marion County, Oregon. See his Find A Grave Memorial# 27876245.

E. Neaty/Neetee Mendenhall, born c. 1868/69 in Iowa. Neetee is believed to have been married to ___________ Thompson.

F. Oscar Mendenhall, born August 20, 1871 in Iowa. Oscar Mendenhall died on May 6, 1942 in Boise, Ada County, Idaho.

G. Virtue Mendenhall, born c. 1872/73 in Iowa. Virtue was married to J. C. Weemark on January 9, 1899.

H. Faith Mendenhall, born c. 1875/76 in Iowa. Faith was married to William H. or L. Cavanah. Faith (Mendenhall) Cavanah died on July 28, 1947 on McNeil Island, Pierce County, Washington at the age of 71y, 10m & 1 day and her mortal remains were laid in the New Tacoma Cemetery on Jul 31, 1947.

9. Temple Mendenhall Jr., born September 13, 1846 in Plainfield, Hendricks County, Indiana. Temple lived in Hendricks County, Indiana, near Plainfield, Indiana, all his life except for 10 to 20 year period when his parents initially moved the family to Jasper County, Iowa. Temple and his brother, Elisha and Allen, soon returned to Hendricks County, Indiana by 1880.
Temple is found with the family in Hendricks County, Indiana at the time of the 1850 census. Then c. 1859, Temple's parents moved the family to Jasper County, Iowa. I have yet to find Temple or any of the Mendenhalls in the 1860 census.
At the time of the 1870 census, Temple is found residing in Lynn Grove Township, Jasper County, Iowa, with his brothers, Elisha and Allen. They are farming their own piece of land;

13. Enos Pray Mendenhall, born c. 1857/58 in Indiana. Enos' middle name according to his death certificate was Enos "Pray" Mendenhall. The informant was his niece, Nellie V.
