Stephen A. Douglas Helmick was the youngest of twelve children of Nathaniel H. and Mary T. Helmick, born near Farmer City June 8, 1858. There he grew to manhood.
On April 9, 1878 he married Miss Marrieta Griffith of Farmer City. They were the parents of two sons. Will of Gibson City and Guy of Phoenix, Arizona, both of whom survive. They moved from near Farmer City to a place south of Gibson City where they farmed on an extensive scale until 1902 when they moved into town. Mrs. Helmick died May 23, 1904.
Mr. Helmick formed a partnership with W. R. Jones and for two years the firm of Jones and Helmick conducted a hardware store in Gibson City.
On June 22, 1905 he married Miss Margaret Anna Durheim of Paxton, who survives.
Although retired from actual work, Mr. Helmick always took a keen interest in his farm south of the city and spent much of his time there until his illness two months ago.
