William Wolf was the son of George and Catharine Foreman Wolf. He married Mary C. Platt, daughter of George and Marie Dudenhoefer Platt, on August 24, 1861 in Harrison County, Indiana. They had 10 children:

In the 1850's William was living north of New Middletown in Webster township of Harrison County, Indiana. He lost his father George in 1853 and his mother Catharine in 1858. His grandfather, Henry, died six months later in the same year. According to the Minor Heirs of Henry Wolf Probate Record, William was living with Conrad Hartman (Husband of Magdaline Wolf, aunt of William) in 1858. In 1860 William was living just west of Central Barren in the household of Lewis Platt as a laborer. There he met Mary C. Platt and married her the next year on August 24, 1861. By 1870 William and Mary had purchased all of the land once owned by Mary's parents. Barbara Wolf, sister of William, married Jacob Haub at the Wolf resident on March 22, 1883.
William was a soldier in Indiana for the Union. He enlisted as a Private on 23 September 1864 and was drafted in Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment Indiana. He mustered out on 21 June 1865 with a Distinguished Service. The Indiana 9th Infantry fought in the Battle of Franklin and the Battle of Nashville in Tennessee.
In the 1890's William and his family moved to Palmyra. There he owned a large flouring mill along with his son Andrew Wolf and named it Wolf & Son Co. They operated on Wednesdays and Saturdays. In June of 1905, the Wolf and Son mill was destroyed by fire. William Wolf died a few months later on September 22, 1905.
William joined the New Albany Calvary German Methodist Church on February 8, 1857 as Wilhelm Wolf.
