CARLSBAD — Funeral services for John Allen, 88, of North Howard Street, are scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Blodgett Street Baptist Church with Pastor David Prell, Pastor Bobby Fuller and Pastor Gary Wolfe officiating.

Mr. Allen died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at the University Medical Center in Lubbock.

Interment at Carlsbad Cemetery will follow the funeral service.

Presentation of the American flag by Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will take place at graveside.

Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

John Allen was born to John Irma Allen, Sr. and Edith Brown Allen on May 26, 1918, in Mountain Park, Okla. He grew up and attended school in Blair, Okla.

John moved to Dora, N.M. where he was self- employed as a truck driver delivering gasoline to rural areas. He joined the Army in June 1942, and in October of that year married the lady who would be his friend and partner for the next 63 years, Dorothy Prater. John spent the next two years in Europe serving his country during World War II. John and Dorothy moved to Carlsbad in 1951 where he was an electrician for Budwine Service Electric and Carlsbad Electric until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Blodgett Street Baptist Church and served as a Deacon and Treasurer for many years. He recently received a 50-year member pin from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. John enjoyed making watches and clocks in his spare time, a craft he learned while in the Army. He loved his family and church, and will be missed by many whose lives he touched.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years Dorothy; son Royce Allen and wife MaryAnn of Carlsbad; brother Travis Allen and wife Gladys of Artesia; two sisters, Verla Brown and husband Delbert of Portales and Zona Lee Garrison and husband Alvin of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two grandsons, Christopher Allen, wife Crystal and children Caylei and Carter of Pearland, Texas and Sean Allen of Pearland; step-granddaughter, Farah Coleman and children Hailie and Kenzi Coleman of Carlsbad; and brother-in-law, Billy Prater and wife Peggy of Dora, N.M.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Allen, Sr. and Edith Allen and a sister, Frances Shafer.

Pallbearers will be Bob Moss, Berry Pace, Terry Patterson, Dave Bryant, Keith Lacy and Barry Calahan. Honorary pallbearers are Alan Lacy, Willie Smith, Ernest Crowley, J.C. Evans, Billy Johnson, Bill Fincher, Dan Dowhower, Ron Pyeatt, Melvin Pyeatt, Mark Davis, Dirk Ellyson and his church family.
