The son of George & Catharine (Doll) Mish, he was an 1853 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, and in 1858 opened a medical practice in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He married Mary E. Smuller in 1859 and fathered Caroline (b. 11/23/60 - married Charles H. Saul), George S. (b. 02/05/66), Mary C. (b. 09/22/69 - married Colin Spangler Few), and Frederick (b. 11/26/72).

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted and mustered into state service September 13, 1862, as surgeon for the 6th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with the regiment September 25, 1862.
2. Enlisted in Carlisle and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 4, 1862, as assistant surgeon with the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry (160th Pa). Captured at Stone's River (Murfreesboro) on December 29, 1862, he was held captive until paroled sometime during the following February. He returned to duty and honorably discharged with the regiment June 21, 1865.

He died at his daughter Caroline's home from "senility."
