Lewis Bions Barker is the son of Revolutionary War veteran Stephen Ellison Barker and Elizabeth "Betsy" Lloyd Massey. He met and married Huldah Bates, daughter of Revolutionary War veteran James W. and Nancy (Webster) Bates, in Grant County, Kentucky, about 1827. They moved to northeastern Missouri about 1853, settling first in Lewis County and later in Wrightsville, Union Township, Clark County, Missouri. Between 1860 and 1870 they moved to Vest Township, Scotland County, Missouri, where they remained for the rest of their lives. They were the parents of sixteen children.
