Armistead Long II was the son of Revolutionary War soldier Armistead Long and his wife Eliza Burgess Ball of Loudoun and Culpeper, Virginia. His father, Armistead Long, was born in Culpeper in 1762 and died in Culpeper in 1831. Armistead was married first to Calista Rosser Cralle, with whom he had 7 children including General Armistead Lindsay Long, aide-de-camp to Robert E. Lee. At her death he married Mrs. Elizabeth Curle Perry, with whom he had 5 more children. He farmed the Oak Grove property.
