John Martin was but three years old when his parents Martin b 1767 memorial 154660067 brought him to Ohio from Virginia and they settled in Muskingum County, where they were among the very earliest pioneers of that county. He married Sophia Fairbamks 4 July 1822 in Muskingum County and learned the cooper's trade until 1833, when he moved to Hancock County, where he held the office of the justice of the peace for three years. John then moved to Gilboa, Putman County, where he remained until 1844, when he moved to Ottawa Township, where he again held the office of justice of the peace for six years and where he spent the remainder of his years.
