In his early school years he attended Vanderdasson School and graduated from Emmett High School in 1953. After graduation, he joined the National Guard. He worked for Thurman Fruit Ranch and in the evenings, he ran the movie projectors at the Ideal Theatre and Emmett Drive-In Theatre. It was here that he met a carhop, Joan Jones. After a short courtship, they married on Nov. 16, 1957. In 1959, he started working at Boise Cascade Sawmill until he retired in 1997. In the early years of their marriage, he was called for active duty at Fort Lewis, Wash., where he served for about one year.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Earl and two sisters, Marjorie and Jean.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons, Steve (Karla) and Brent (Debbie); five grandkids, Kasey (Lisa), Katie, Kara (Justin), Mike (Morgan) and Chris (Larissa); and 11 great-grandkids. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert (Fay) and Larry (Virginia).
He enjoyed fishing with his boys and growing a large garden. Family outings were often spent in the mountains cutting firewood and picking huckleberries. His greatest joy came from being with his family and watching all their various activities. His family fondly named him "Gramps"- he was greatly loved and will be forever missed.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, 2014 at the Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett. Burial will follow at the Emmett Cemetery.
