Death’s Harvest

While to nearly every home in our city yesterday, the beautiful Christmas festival brought joy, there was one to which Sorrow came, doubly laden. We refer to the home of Mrs. Catherine Dormer, whose daughter Ellen Amelia, and sister, Mrs. Mary Sims, lay side by side, robed and cofffined for the grave. For many months past, the shadow of Death has hovered over that household, only to vanish, bearing away a young and lovely girl as well as one who had passed the meridian of woman’s life.

At 8 o’clock on Wednesday night, Mrs. Sims breathed her last. She was an excellent lady, and well known in Galena, which had long been her home. In 1863 she became a widow, her husband, the late Lieut. Nelson R. Sims, Co. F., 96th Regt. Ill. Infantry, receiving wounds at Chickamauga, which resulted in death in the hospital on the 29th of September, 1863. A few years after the death of her husband, Mrs. Sims was bereft of her only child, a devoted daughter of 16 years. The age of deceased was 46 years, many of which were passed in feeble health.

Miss Amelia Dormer expired at 3 o’clock on Christmas morning. Her disease was consumption. The illness began more than a year ago, and was attended with but little physical suffering. She was a young lady of more than ordinary force of character, to which was united true piety and many of the accomplishments and charms of person which render young women attractive. Her age was 25 years. Miss Dormer leaves to mourn her early death, a widowed mother, two sisters (the eldest of whom is the wife of Mr. Frank Marfield), and one brother, all residents of this city.

The funeral of Mrs. Sims and of her niece, Miss Dormer, will take place from the family residence on Franklin street, to-morrow (Saturday) forenoon, at 10 o’clock. At 10:30 Requiem Mass will be celebrated for the deceased at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, of which both were devout members. Friends of the family are invited to attend.

In their affliction the bereaved ones have the sympathy of many friends, who would help them bear this load of grief if they could. Many times have the sorrows of Death passed over their heads, and each time has the household been despoiled of a loved sister, brother or daughter. About five years ago the brother of Mrs. Dormer, Thomas Butler, died; and but little more than a year ago, a beautiful daughter, Clara Dormer, the youngest of the band of sisters, passed to the spirit land.
