Albert McCollam died Sunday, Aug 1, 2004 in his Foresthill home. Born Dec 2, 1914 in San Francisco, CA, he was a fourth generation Placer County resident.

Bert began a military career in 1934 and entered USMA West Point, graduating with the class of 1939. At the academy he enjoyed archery and played in the academy's lead trumpet position.

He served in WWII in the 3rd Army under the command of Gen. Patton. Bert commanded a lead engineer battalion, preparing the way for Gen Patton's tanks' rapid movement across Europe, from Normandy in France to Southern Germany and Southwest Czechoslovakia. He returned to the United States and graduated from Cal Poly Pasadena with a Masters degree in Civil Engineering. Bert was an instructor of engineering at West Point and Sacramento State University. He attended the Army War College in Pennsylvania, after which he was sent to the Korean Conflict as a battalion commander.

After serving a tour in Japan as a US Army Engineer, he returned to the United States to serve as the Deputy District Engineer for the Corps of Engineers in San Francisco and then the District Engineer for the Corps in Sacramento. He supervised the Corps' building of the Folsom Dam. He returned to Germany again to command an Army Engineer Group and later served as a 7th Army Engineer.

He began a civilian career as the California State General Manager of the Reclamation Board until he retired in 1975. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

He enjoyed archery, golf, photography, hunting, and fishing. But most of all he enjoyed his wife of 60 years and his family. Bert is survived by his children; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
