Prominent local physician and Abilene Christian University trustee, Dr. Roy Willingham died early Wednesday morning at Hendrick Medical Center, where he had served in numerous leadership capacities over three decades. He was 75.
The funeral service will be at 2 PM Saturday at University Church of Christ. Willingham had served as an elder almost continuously in various congregations since 1960 and was an elder at University Church of Christ at the time of his death. Services will be directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. Burial will be in Abilene Municipal Cemetery in the Cedar Hill section in Abilene, TX.
Willingham was born January 29, 1926 in Quail, TX. He graduated from Wewoka High School in Oklahoma in 1943 and attended Freed-Hardeman and Pepperdine Universities before earning his BS from ACU in 1946. He earned his MS from the University of Tennessee in 1950 and his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1959.
In 1946, Willingham married Nola Hubbard. The couple was married 55 years and had five children.
From 1946-1954, Willingham was a member of the biology faculty at ACU, serving as department chairman from 1951-1954. The ACU Board of Trustees honored him in 1954 as "Outstanding Teacher of the Year."
Survivors include his wife, Nola; three sons – Mike Willingham and his wife, Donna of Mansfield; Steven Willingham and his wife, Bonnie of Abilene; and David Willingham and his wife, Pamela, also of Abilene; two daughters – Karen Willingham of Abilene and Rebecca Willingham-Winchester of Abilene; a sister – Trula Mae Brown of Abilene; a brother – Charles Willingham of Arlington; ten grandchildren – Shelley, Melody, Robin, Holly, Ryan, Kyle, Kristen and Christopher Willingham and Nicholas and Matthew Winchester; and one great-grandchild – Tatum Rose Willingham.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brent Willingham.
The family has requested that memorials be made to the Dr. Roy Willingham Endowment Fund, Abilene Christian University in Abilene, TX.
