Daniel Mowen married as his second wife, Susan Koogle (1839-1918), the sister of Myersville's Medal of Honor Winner Jacob Koogle (1841-1915). They had one daughter who died at birth in 1883 and was buried in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, but no further children. Susan Koogle died in Hagerstown during the flu pandemic of 1918. She was buried at St. Paul's.
After her death, Daniel moved to New Jersey where all of his sons lived.
According to his obituary in the Bridgewater Courier News, which appeared the day following Daniel's death on 12 Jul 1922," Mowen went to New York City for an operation at Memorial Hospital to remove a carbuncle on his breast. He was thought to be improving and expected to return to Plainfield (NJ) within a short time. Complications developed yesterday, and with the consent of the family, an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death."
On 15 Jul 1922, a funeral for Daniel Mowen occurred at the home of his son Charles. Interment took place afterward in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains, New Jersey, not where Daniel had intended to rest, beside his second wife Susan, in Myersville. The grave stone in St. Paul's is fully inscribed with the couples' names and dates. For Daniel, however, that stone is a civilian cenotaph. The marker under which he rests in Hillside Cemetery is a military issued and notes his military service with the 7th Maryland.
