Mary M. Newman Shivers, 93, of West Alexander, died at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2015, in her home.

She was born August 29, 1922, in Washington, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Harriett Plott Hall.

Mrs. Shivers resided in the West Alexander area since 1949. She was a member of First Christian Church in West Alexander. She was a former member of Claysville Order of the Eastern Star and a former member of West Alexander American Legion Auxiliary.

She was an accomplished amateur portrait artist.

Mrs. Shivers was first married to James Dwight Newman, who died in January 1968. In 1975, she married Benjamin Franklin Shivers, who died in April 2002.

Surviving are two sons, Guy, husband of Shelly Newman of West Alexander and James W. Newman of Washington; a daughter, Mary R. Garove of West Alexander; two stepsons, Benjamin F. Shivers Jr. husband of Sandra Shivers of South Carolina and Richard Shivers of West Alexander; a foster daughter, Marcia Kramer of Washington; and seven grandchildren, William F. McAdoo Jr., Scott McAdoo, Christina M. Hunter, Michelle Edgmon, J.J. Newman, Angela Sprowls and Jacob Knoneberg.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husbands, are a son, Thomas Newman, who died at birth; a daughter, Margaret (Peg) McAdoo; a granddaughter, Lori Gatten; and a daughter-in-law, Carol Beth Newman.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in First Christian Church, West Alexander, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 31, with the Rev. Bruce Graff officiating. Interment will follow in West Alexander Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Christian Church, 61 Liberty Road, West Alexander, PA 15376, or Washington Health System Hospice Care, 155 Wilson Avenue, Washington, PA 15301.
