MAQUOKETA, Iowa - Edward C. Mason, 88, of Maquoketa, formerly of Elwood, died Thursday afternoon, June 5, 1997, at Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa.

Private family graveside services and burial will be at a later date. There will be no public visitation. The body was cremated. The Carson & Son Funeral Home, Maquoketa, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mason began his teaching career in Garrison, and subsequently was a school superintendent and teacher in Elkport, Deloit, Thornton, Hazelton, Atkins, Lacey and Elwood schools, retiring to Maquoketa in 1973.

He was born on June 10, 1908, in Hopkinton, son of Ward C. and Jessie (Fraser) Mason. He married Lucille E. Winey on May 15, 1939, in Sioux City; she preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 1995.

He graduated from Lenox Junior College, Hopkinton. He then went to Coe College, Cedar Rapids, where he received his bachelor of arts degree in political science. In 1936 he earned a master's degree in political science from the University of Iowa at Iowa City. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, traveling and genealogy.

Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Morgan, of Galena, Ill.; a son, Thomas Mason, of DeWitt; and two nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and a brother.

An Edward C. Mason Memorial Fund has been established.
