East Alamosa resident Ernesto “Ernie” Alfonso Roybal, Sr., 77, entered into Heaven on September 8, 2015 in Denver. Ernie was born on September 5, 1938 in Ortiz, Colorado, the son of Zacarias and Dulcinia Espinosa Ruybal. He married his beloved Eva Louise Aguilar on January 4, 1958 in Alamosa.

Ernie was a career non-commissioned officer (NCO) in the United States Air Force and served in the Vietnam War at Nha Trang Air Base. During his Air Force career in vehicle and munitions maintenance (IYAAYAS), he served his nation in South Korea, South Vietnam, Thailand, Germany, England, Puerto Rico (during the Cuban Missile Crisis), and several bases within the US.

After retiring from the Air Force, Ernie worked as an Agricultural Inspector for the State of Colorado and retired after 20 years service. After his second “retirement”, he immediately started his own successful business in automotive detailing.

He was very involved in veteran’s and civic affairs, serving as Veterans of Foreign Wars District Commander and Post 899 Commander for several years. He was a Life Member of the VFW and the American Legion.

He ran twice for Alamosa County Commissioner, and he enjoyed meeting folks from all parts of the county during his campaigns. He also served as Vice President of the East Alamosa Water and Sanitation District.

Ernie enjoyed being with his family, reading, elk hunting, visiting his friends at the VFW, playing pinochle, and watching the Denver Broncos.

Survivors include his wife Eva of Alamosa, CO; four sons Reggie of Golden, CO; Ernest Jr. (Stephanie) of Decatur, AL; Bernie of Littleton, CO; and, Steve of Alamosa; 7 grandchildren; and sister Naomi Elva (Eddie McGill) Linville of Denver, CO.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Rebecca Ruybal and Emma Sandoval; and, brothers Solomon, Ruben, Reggie, Bernie, Octaviano, and Obed Ruybal.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, Sept 12, 2015 at 2PM at the Romero Funeral Chapel in Alamosa. Interment will follow with full military honors in the Veteran’s Section of the Alamosa Cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be held on Friday from 4-6 Pm at the Romero Funeral Chapel. Arrangements are in care of Romero Funeral Home of Alamosa.
