Fanny Electa Snider Lake was born in Camden, Ontario, Canada in 1828. Her parents are John Snider and Jane Noble. The Snider family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) while in Canada. The family moved to the United States and gathered with the Mormons there. John Snider died in St. Louis, Missouri in 1849.

Electa and Barnabas married in Atchison County, Missouri on 31 March 1850. The Sniders continued on to Florence, Nebraska and with the James Lake family and started to cross the plains to Utah. Cholera broke out in the camp along the Platte River. At Devil's Gate, Wyoming, in August, Electa died.

Barnabas continued on alone to Utah. It was said that Electa was ever the love of his life. When Barnabas remarried and started a family, he named his first daughter, Electa.
