John Kennie Sewell was born on April 7, 1855 in Alabama, and he was the son of Judge Henry Abihue Sewell (1817–1865) and his wife Margaret (Kelly) Sewell (1818–1893).
He married March 13, 1879 in Elmore County, Alabama to Louisa Rhoda Wingard (1847–1927), and she was the daughter of Reverend Christian Wingard Jr (1804–1895) and Anna Katharina (Nichols) Wingard (1810–1882).
A farmer living in Bordeaux on Route 6 in Davidson County, Tennessee, John was 80 years old and married when he died at home of myocarditis on March 28, 1936. Burial was two days later in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
