1881 Lafayette Co., MO history, pg. 492:
J. H. Bumgarner, blacksmith, P.O. Odessa, is a native of this state and county, born in 1855. His father, A.J. Bumgarner, was a blacksmith and came from Virginia to the county in 1850. J.H. learned his trade of his father and spent the greater protion of his life, up to 1879, at Greenton, engaged in its prosecution. In 1877 he was united in marriage to Miss Fannie [Francis] Emison, of this county. Two children were born to them [they had 7 in all], Claude and Annette. In 1879 Mr. Bumgarner came to Odessa and entered the firm of Bumgarner & Ryland, as senior member. They are the leading blacksmiths of the town and have a large trade from the surrounding country, Mr. Bumgarner is a member of the A.F. and A.M. and esteemed and respected by all.

James Bumgarner, an old citizen of Odessa, died suddenly early Friday morning of apoplexy. He was 70 years of age.
