A. R. Roberts, known to most as Audie, was born February 18, 1924, in Hamilton County, TX to the home of Martha Ann (Stanford) and Charles Edgar Roberts and died peacefully at his home on October 20, 2015. Audie attended school in Olin, TX. In 1943, he was among the first of the 18 year old draftees into the Army Air Corps to serve during World War II. Mr. Roberts served in Saipan in the Philippines, Guam, Japan and Honolulu. After his discharge on December 19, 1945, he returned to his home in Texas. On October 2, 1948, in Dublin, TX, he was married to Billie Ruth Hall. They made their home in Hamilton,TX until December of 1959, when they moved to Dora.
In the summer of 1960 they moved to Elida. During that time period, Audie worked on various farms and ranches in the area. In 1966, they moved to Dora, and he became the custodian for the Dora Schools. In 1977, they moved to Floyd, and he went to work as school custodian there. He and his wife moved to Portales in 1988 when he officially retired. Audie was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing dominoes and forty-two and fishing. When he was a young man, he played softball, but in later years, Audie loved to enjoy the outdoors on his front porch where he would sit for hours.
He is survived by Billie, his wife of more than 67 years; four sons, and three daughters-in-law, Gary and Linda Roberts of Hale Center, TX, Ronnie and Lou Roberts of Meade, KS, Russell Roberts and Larry and Lori Roberts of Portales; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tricia and Ronnie Young of Clovis and Sharon and Tony Reynolds of Mountainair, NM; and 19 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ray, Eckie and Earlene Roberts and a sister, Murlene Mosely, a son-in-law, Stanley Heisch who died in 2012; two daughters-in-law, Estela Roberts in 2004 and Karen Roberts in 2012 and a grandson and a great-grandson.
