James was born in 1858 in Wisconsin. His family moved from Wisconsin to California in 1865-66. In 1871 they moved to Iowa where they farmed until the spring of 1883 when James moved to S.D. to homestead on the NE 1/4 of Section 4 Altoona township in Beadle county.

James served on several township boards and county offices. He married Lizzie Bailey in 1866. To this union 7 children were born. They lived in Allen township for many years before retiring and moving to Huron.
