Carol Abbott Butterfield
November 6, 1927 - October 12, 2015
Resided in Ogden, Utah

After living a long life filled with service to others, Carol Abbott Butterfield of Ogden passed away peacefully after a long battle with congestive heart failure, osteoporosis and arthritis on Monday, October 12, 2015. Though the last years of her life were filled with pain, she never lost her sense of humor. It seemed the humor got her through her hardest days.

Carol was born in Paragonah, Utah on November 6, 1927 to Samuel Abbott and Susann Myrtle Robinson Abbott. Life on the farm was full of hard work and she never lost that habit. Playing the trombone and sewing were talents she developed. Winning the 4H fashion review earned her a scholarship to the BAC in Cedar City and later Utah State University where she earned a BS degree in food and nutrition. She married Paul Gordon Butterfield while at school. They were married December 16, 1949. They were blessed with six children as they moved around the country for Paul's jobs and further education. Colorado, Washington, Wisconsin, and Utah were all home at one time or another. Her sewing, food skills, hard work, and frugality made life good for the family wherever they were.

After she was divorced, Carol went back to Weber State College and earned her RN degree. She worked at McKay Dee Hospital for many years. During this time she also served as an adjunct faculty member training many aspiring nurses. Her kind and loving care helped hundreds of patients on their road to recovery. She also worked for the USU extension service food and nutrition program while she earned her degree and after retiring, served in the LDS church extraction program for almost nine years. She loved this work and the people she worked with. Their team brought thousands of names and information to the genealogical data base.

Carol served in the Relief Society, Sunday School and Primary. She served as a primary teacher even into her 81st year. She was an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers to the end of her life.

Her greatest calling was as a mother. All of her six children married in the temple. Five of her six children served LDS missions, and all three sons earned their Eagle Scout Award. She has 24 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren with 3 more on the way. The have all received beautiful quilts, afghans and dish towels, enjoyed sleepovers, games, and lots of fun at grandma's. She also loved to visit them around the country and attend award ceremonies and baptisms and traveled with many family members to enjoy historical sites. She frequently attended plays and concerts with her friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers, and a sister.

She is survived by her sister, Emma Rasmussen of Parowan, Utah; her children, Paula (Leslie) Maddock of Ogden, Greg (Robin) Butterfield of Boise, Idaho, Sue (Paul) Cook of Kent, Washington, Lynn (Sue) Butterfield of Erda, Utah, David (Martha) Butterfield of Saudi Arabia, Tammy (Roy) Ellis of Holly Springs, Georgia and their children and grandchildren.

The family would like to thank all who made Carol's life richer because of their service and friendship including Ronda and the loving staff at Crestwood Care Center. They are all truly angels in scrubs.

The family would love to greet her friends at a viewing held at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, October 23, 2015 and on Saturday, October 24, 2015 from 9:30 to 10:40 AM at the Lorin Farr Stake Center at 480 7th Street with funeral services following at 11AM.

Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park, 100 Monroe Blvd.
