Eldest son of Indiana State Senator Abraham Cuppy (1810-1847) and Sarah Collins Cuppy (1813-1900); paternal uncle of humorist Will Cuppy (1884-1949). Known as "Will," he probably was the namesake of his famous nephew.

Capt., Co. E, 44th Ind. Vol. Inf. Wounded in thigh at Ft. Donelson, TN, February 16, 1862. Underwent surgery at Henderson, KY, but ball remained in his leg. Also suffered from typhoid fever. He returned home to South Whitley in June 1862 and died of his wounds.

The Grand Army of the Republic post in South Whitley was named in his honor.
