Malcolm Childress, age 67 of Rutherfordton, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Hospice House of Rutherford County.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Wanda B. Childress of the home, a sister-in-law, Risë Bostic of Shelby, NC, a mother-in-law, Lois S. Bostic of Shelby, NC and numerous cousins.
Born April 17, 1948 in Cleveland County, Mr. Childress was the son of the late William "Jimmie" and Peggy (Putnam) Childress and was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Susan Childress.
Mr. Childress graduated from Shelby High School and attended Western Carolina University. He served in the United States Navy working on aircraft earning the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. After his service in the military, he graduated from Piedmont Aerospace in Winston-Salem, NC, with an associate's degree in Electromechanical Engineering. At the age of 16, he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed working as a counselor at Camp Bud Schiele in Tryon, NC. He served as the first director of 911 services in Rutherford County. He enjoyed fishing, Shelby High School football and Carolina Tar Heels basketball, the beach, his pets, and spending time with his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Cleveland Funeral Services and Crematory Chapel conducted by Dr. Keith Stephenson. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
