Edmund J. Hilleson, 87, of Lee, Ill., died Monday, June 4, 2007, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Jan. 31, 1920, in Lee, he was the son of Thomas and Sarah (Oppedahl) Hilleson. He married Mavis Swanson on Aug. 7, 1943, in Hollywood, Fla.
Edmund graduated in 1938 from Shabbona High School and in 1940 from Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, where he was a tenor in the concert choir. Edmund was a World War II veteran, having served as a PBY Catalina pilot in the Navy. He achieved the rank of lieutenant junior grade A1 and received several medals of recognition for his service.
Edmund farmed in the rural Lee area for many years. He was a member of Waterman American Legion Post 654. He also served as a 4-H leader in Lee County. An active member of First Lutheran Church in Lee, he had served as a choir member, church council president and Sunday school superintendent. He was a devoted husband and loving family man.
He is survived by his wife, Mavis; three sons, Steve (Brenda) Hilleson of Britt, Iowa, James (Heidi) Hilleson of Muncie, Ind., and John (Michelle) Hilleson of Lee; three daughters, Kristen (Dave) Rossi of Rockford, Anne Hilleson Anderson of Forest City, Iowa, and Jeanette (Cliff) Parker of Edwardsville; a sister, Helen Olson of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Aagot Challand and Ruth Freeman; and a grandson, Brian Hilleson.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at First Lutheran Church in Lee, with Pastor Sarah Schaffner officiating. Burial with military honors will be at First Lutheran Cemetery in Lee. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Jacobson Funeral Home, 303 N. Illini, P.O. Box 242, Shabbona IL 60550.
Memorials are being established for Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, and the American Cancer Society.
