Florence Maurine Bridges was the second of three children of William Bridges and Francis ‘Fannie’ (Murphy) Bridges. Her family spent most of their life near Kahoka, Clark County, Missouri, where her father was a pharmacist. She provided soul care for her father for three years after the death of her mother in 1937.

She married late in life in 1957 in Tucson, Arizona, to Aubrey Chester Buchanan as his second wife. Florence was well-known and liked during her career with the Robinson Schools as an elementary music teacher. She sang with the Methodist choir and was also a talented pianist, much sought after to accompany soloists. She became acquainted with Aubrey and his first wife Mary when accompanying a male quartet consisting of Aubrey Buchanan, Jesse Sheets, Clinton James, and Elmer Boyd. Following Aubrey’s untimely death in December 1958, she moved to Tucson in 1961, where she returned to her music teaching career until her retirement in 1968.
