Samuel Haptonstall was one of 5 sons & 6 daughters born to Abraham & Rachel (Price) Haptonstall in Greenbrier, (West) Virginia. Many of the Haptonstall line moved to Raccoon Twp. in Gallia, Ohio about the time of Samuel's marriage to "Elener" Perkins in 1819 as learned from the 1820 Gallia Co. census. The 1830 census revealed that Samuel had moved his family to Greenfield Twp. in Gallia Co. prior to the 1830 census. His family had expanded from no children in 1820 to seven children (1 son & 6 daughters). The 1840 census revealed the family continuing to reside in Greenfield Twp. with a family of 10 children (4 sons & 6 daughters). The number does not include babies who may have died in infancy or a daughter like Mary, who died in 1838 (see FAG memorial # 58068249).
Samuel Haptonstall proved himself to be a very industrious and ingenious entrepreneur. In less than 2 decades he would have purchased 5 land patents from the Chillicothe Land Office totaling in excess of 320 acres. He built a dam across Symnes Creek and erected a saw mill which was powered by water.
In the mid 1840's, many of the Haptonstall line left Gallia Co for Knox Co. IL. At about the same time, Samuel moved his family to DeKalb Co. MO. The 1850 MO census reveals that all but 6 children of the family had established homes of their own. Samuel was 53 years of age in 1850. While Samuel died in 1853 at the age of ABT 56, his death & interment record was not found.
