Hedda Orecchio, 83, of Florence died April 8, 2000. She was born Jan. 17, 1930, in Salida, to Frank and Josephine Botz.
Mrs. Orecchio attended school in Salida and was the only woman to play baseball with a semi-pro man's team. She had the chance to play ball with Babe Dickerson and the House of David team in the late 1930s.
Mrs. Orecchio was a 50-year resident of Florence. She was a member of the St. Benedict's Parish.
For many years, Mrs. Orecchio was active in the Altar and Rosary Society, a member of Eagles Auxiliary # 169, and a Lady Elk with Elks Lodge #611. she was a full-time homemaker and later in life enjoyed waiting tables and tending bar at local Florence establishments. Mrs. Orecchio loved her home, her friends, gardening, watching and teaching her grandson baseball and spending time with her golden retriever, Sparky.
On Nov. 7, 1949, in Raton, N.M., she married Frank Orecchio, who preceded her in death in 1970.
She is survived by her only child, and a grandson, whom she loved dearly; a sister: Josephine Botz at Progressive Care center in Canon City; numerous nieces and nephews; her son-in-law; a very special friend who was almost like a second daughter, and her daughter of Canon City; and two longtime close friends of Florence.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and a sister.
At her request, there will be no formal services. It was her wishes that family and friends celebrate her life and toast her farewell.
A gathering will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Louie's Place in Florence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sangre de Cristo Hospice West or Penrose Hospital Cancer Center. Services are under the direction of Charles Anthony Funeral Home in Florence,.
