Exerpt from the book, "Good Night Too Soon" by Carolyn Byers
"The Androscoggin River, flowing through Topsham, provided a water road for Log transportation. Henry spent many hours down at the river watching the action. Little did he realize the chill the rain and the dampness brought.
After tramping along the riverbank one day, Henry lay down in the vacant store that had been rented to work on some charts, and slept with only a few damp cloths tossed over him. A chilly wind blew through the room where he slept. This gave him a severe cold....
His cold turned to Pneumonia and he suffered a fever and severe coughing. He died at 1:30 in the afterneen of December 8.
On December 10 friends held a funeral service for Henry in the Baptist church in Topsham. His body was shipped to Battle Creek, where on December 21, 1863 Friends and classmates met in the church for Henry's farewell."
