He was born on Dec. 27, 1940, in Chicago, to Marshall and Bernice Mencel. On May 9, 1970, he married Karen Dunn.
He was employed by United Airlines. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Marengo.
Survivors include his wife, a son, Matthew (Stephanie) Mencel of Blandinsville, a daughter, Diana (Scott) Dieckhoff of Fredricksburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Rachel and William Mencel and Garrett and Emily Dieckhoff; two brothers, Robert (Linda) Mencel of Tucson, Ariz. and Randall (Sandra) Mencel of Marengo; and four nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at Argyle Bible Church, 5135 N. 1250th Road, Colchester.
