She is the wife of Lawrence Leslie Grinnell and daughter of Nathan Parker and Cornelia (Grinnell) Willis

Among other references, Medeiros' book cites on page 88 an 1854 letter from abolitionist William Cooper Nell to Amy Post in the Harriet Jacobs Papers, in which he spoke of visiting the Willis home and witnessing the christening of their (then) youngest child Edith.
