Grand Ledge Independent Newspaper Head Dies Saturday- Grand Ledge-- Walter R Cantine, 50 Publisher of the Grand Ledge Independent died unexpectedly Saturday morning in a Lansing Hospital. Mr Cantine had been in and out of the hospital for several months and death followed surgery for a heart ailment. He had been in newspaper work most of his life. starting out as a carrier in his natice Battle Creek. Mr Cantine worked in the printing and circulation departments of the Battle Creek Enquirer-News for many years and was a mailroom superintendent when he left to buy the Bellevue Gazette. The Independent is one of four weekly honored friday nighy by the Michigan Education Association. The School Bell Award was accepted by Cantine's son Peter. Ten yaers ago, he and his wife purchased the Independent, a weekly newspaper serving the Grand Ledge area. Cantine was second Vice president of the Grand Ledge Rotary Club, a charter member and former teasurer of the city's improvement associatio, a former area committeeman for the Boy Scoutsm and a member of the Michigan Press Association. Survivors include the widow Georgene, a son, Peter; his mother Pearl Cantine, and a brother Alvah Cantine, both of Battle Creek, and a sister, Mrs Ruby Kosbar of Benton Harbor.
