Born October 6, 1923, Germain Harmon Ball passed away July 31, 2010, at the age of 86.
Germain was a 3rd generation Arizonan and grandson of former City of Phoenix Mayor, Lon Harmon. He is remembered by his friends and business associates as a man of his word. He started his career as a rancher and farmer and his handshake meant more than any written contract.
Through his many affiliations in the business community he was influential on the boards and committees for which he served. He became a member of the Board of Directors for the Salt River Project in 1960, serving for 22 years and was Chairman of the Power Committee of SRP from 1972 - 1981. He was a member of the Board of Directors for First Interstate Bank for 29 years, a member of both the Arizona and National Reclamation Associations, a member of the Colorado River Water Users Association, Chairman of the Community Services and Highway Sub-committee, a Board Member of the Industrial Development Corporation of Maricopa County and was vice president of Cotton Commodities, Inc.
He was one of the founders of the Hy-White Gin. He later became the CEO of the Schirmer Ball Company, real estate investment and development company. Germain attended North Phoenix High School, Brown Military Academy and the University of Arizona. He went on to serve proudly in WWII. He found a true passion for the game of golf and accumulated 6 holes-in-one during his lifetime. He was an active member of the Phoenix Country Club and a former member of the Paradise Valley, White Mountain and Wigwam Country Clubs.
Germain had a true heart for the children of our community. True to his character, he gave back to our community in a private philanthropic way by opening the door for hundreds of students to fulfill their dreams with his generous college scholarships and support.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends for his wonderful sense of humor, generosity and his homemade jerky from the Yolo Ranch days. He truly was one of a kind.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Kathy and Barbara; grandchildren, Andrew, Barrett and Elizabeth; four great-grandchildren and his "right-hand man", Scott Schirmer.
